These provide us with a Cabernet with bold tannins and ripe fruit characteristics, which coupled with the natural acidity from the long growing season, creates a beautiful wine.” According to Karl Wente, 5th generation winemaker at Wente, “Our Charles Wetmore Cabernet Sauvignon has a great expression of Livermore Valley, with fruit sourced from our diverse soils such as our clay hillside vineyards and those planted on gravelly alluvial fans. They understand the microclimate and soil intimately. The Wente family has been farming the Charles Wetmore vineyard for decades. The Charles Wetmore Cabernet Sauvignon is their tribute to this California wine legend. Descendants of these Bordeaux transplants still thrive at Wente today. Wetmore was California’s first agricultural commissioner and known for planting vine cuttings from many of Bordeaux’s top Châteaux in the temperate Livermore Valley in 1912. This was the same time when the Wente family were getting their start in the wine business. A Pioneer in Livermore Wine CountryĬharles Wetmore founded one of the first wineries in the Livermore Valley back in 1882. It inspired me to make a grown up version of my ultimate comfort food – macaroni & cheese with bacon.
